Residential vacancies in the Lehigh Valley, as measured by the U.S. Postal Service, dropped for the first time in over two years in the third quarter of 2009. The number of vacancies dropped in both Lehigh and Northampton Counties. In all, there were 1,847 vacant units in Lehigh County (1.26% vacancy rate) and 847 vacancies in Northampton County (0.71%).
The heaviest concentration of residential vacancy is in Center City Allentown, where two neighborhoods have vacancy rates over 10%. Smaller concentrations of vacancies can be found in Bath, the Slate Belt boroughs, parts of Easton and Bethlehem’s South Side.
Residential vacancies are tracked by the U.S. Postal Service and shared with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (http://www.huduser.org/datasets/usps.html).
