Residential acreage subdivided in 2008 fell by 51% from 2007, marking the third straight year of decline. Subdivisions have fallen well off their high water mark in 2002.
Building permits continued to fall for the region in 2008, with permits dropping sharply again in Northampton County but rebounding slightly for Lehigh County. The number of building permits reported in Northampton County declined 82% from 2007 to 2008. Lehigh County’s building permits increased by 150.
Four of the five municipalities with the most building permits since 1980 showed a continued decline in the number of permits issued during 2008. Only Upper Macungie Township showed the same number of permits as in the previous year.
Multi-family housing rebounded somewhat in 2008 with more dwelling units than in the previous year for the first time since 2005.
